An assistant sub-inspector of Sonagazi police station was withdrawn on Friday as he allegedly raped a widow, officials said on Saturday.
The ASI, Sujon Kumar Das, was withdrawn from the police station and attached to the district police lines, confirmed senior assistant superintendent of police Saikul Ahmed Bhuiyan.
The rape case was being investigated by Hassan Mahmud, the superintendent of the Chattogram Range DIG Office’s crime division, he said.
Sonagazi police officer-in-charge Moin Uddin Ahmed, however, claimed that ASI Sujon was recalled due to his negligent handling of the widow’s case over a land dispute.
Sujon was withdrawn after the woman gave a testimony into the rape case to a Feni court on Thursday.
She told the court that Sujon was among the men who raped her but she did not included his name in the case fearing reprisal by the cop.
According to her relatives, the widow’s family members came under attack from one Kala Mia, his son Masud and a few others over a land dispute in the upazila’s Uttar Sonapur village on Sept ember 10.
The widow filed a case over the incident with Sonagazi police. ASI Sujon was assigned as investigation officer of the case.
On September 15, Sujon along with five men raped the woman. Rahima, a domestic help of several police personnel at the police station aided the accused.
They robbed her jewellery and threatening her against disclosing the matter.
After the woman went to the police station to report the incident, ASI Sujon allegedly informed the perpetrators of the matter.
Later, with the intervention of senior officers at the station, the woman as plaintiff filed a case against Sanju Sikdar, Aflas Hossain, Rahima and three other unidentified suspects on September 17.
Accused Sanju and Rahima were sent to jail after the court intervened into the matter.
ASI Sujon could not be reached for comment.
