SM Sultan boat race held in Narail

The traditional SM Sultan boat race was held on Chitra river in the district town of Narail on Saturday.

SM Sultan Foundation and district administration jointly organised the boat race marking SM Sultan’s 95th birth anniversary. A total of 12 boats from different places of Jashore, Khulna and Narail districts participated in the boat race.

State minister for youth and sports ministry Md Zahid Ahsan Russel inaugurated the boat race as the chief guest while secretary of the ministry of youth and sports Dr Md Jafar Uddin was present as special guest.

Superintendent of Narail Police Md Jashim Uddin, Zila Parishad chairman Sohrab Hossain Biswas, district Awami League president Advocate Subash Chandra Bose, district Awami League secretary and Narail Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Nizam Uddin Khan Nilu, district Awami League organising secretary and municipality mayor Md Jahangir Biswas and Sultan Foundation general secretary Ashikur Rahman Miku, among others, were present on the occasion. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Narail and SM Sultan Foundation’s president Anjuman Ara presided over the function.

The boat race began from Sheikh Russel bridge at noon and ended at Machhmadia SM Sultan Chitra Bridge.

Hundreds of all people including men, women and children gathered at the two sides of the Chitra river to see the boat race.

Fahim Shahriar Khan, a first year HSC student at Narail Government Victoria College, said, ‘We wait for an entire year for the SM Sultan Boat race.

The unique event remind us of our culture and tradition.’
