Bangladesh Navy team’s high jumper Mahfuzur Rahman set a new national record when he cleared 2.15-metre on the final day of the 35th Trust Bank National Summer Athletics Championship at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
The 18-year old boy from Kushtia broke a nine-year old record of record Sajib Hossain, who cleared 2.11 metre in February 2010.
‘I am happy. I broke the record. I tried to break the record for three times, finally I set a new national record,’ said Mahfuzur in his immediate reaction.
There was one more record on the second day as Navy athlete Shirin Akter motored her way towards breaking Shohagi Akter’s 200-meter record of 26.05 second earlier in this year, clocking 24:97 seconds.
There was a surprise in the in men’s 200m as Saiful Islam Khan Sunny beat national champion and favourite Zahir Raihan. Sunny clocked 21:83 seconds to finish his dash.
These performances helped Navy emerge champions with 19 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze medals.
Bangladesh Army finished second with 14 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze medals. BJMC finished third with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
