Popular Nazrul Sangeet singer Kalpana Anam said that there is no alternative to rendering Nazrul’s songs properly.

Kalpana has been releasing albums containing relatively lesser known songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam that have been mastered from original recordings and musical notations. She has released 12 albums till date and plans to release more.

‘It is very important to render Nazrul songs following the original musical notations to preserve legacy of Nazrul. The songs featured in my albums have been mastered from original recordings and musical notations. The albums have received huge response from music lovers across the country,’ said Kalpana Anam. ‘We have to encourage the young Nazrul singers to render Nazrul Sangeet properly. I will release six Nazrul albums featuring songs rendered by young singers in future. We have many talented young Nazrul singers in the country. If guided properly, they will do better in future,’ she added.

Kalpana is the joint secretary of Chhayanaut and executive committee member of Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Sangastha.

BNSS has been conducting countrywide workshops on Nazrul Sangeet to encourage and train young singers by rendering Nazrul songs keeping original musical notations and lyrics in mind.

‘There are many talented young singers, who want to pursue Nazrul songs, outside Dhaka. Many of them are learning the songs by watching videos on YouTube. However, most of the songs on YouTube do not follow original musical notations. So BNSS decided to hold workshops across the country for teaching young singers,’ said Kalpana.

‘Artistes of BNSS have conducted workshops in 15 districts across the country including Chattogram, Chandpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Jashore, Khulna, Rangpur, Dinajpur and others this year. Besides, we plan to organise more workshops in Jamalpur, Narail, Kushtia and Mymensingh,’ she added.

When asked about the outcome of the workshops, Kalpana replied, ‘Though Nazrul composed the songs many years ago, they have not lost their appeal. His songs are still popular among young generation and a large number of young singers attended our workshops. When I see that so many young singers are showing interest in Nazrul Sangeet my heart fills with happiness. They keep Nazrul alive by spreading his songs.’
