A speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi on Sunday deferred till September 1 the hearing for the third consecutive time on charge framing against suspended Shahjadpur municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru and 37 others in journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul killing case.

The divisional speedy trial tribunal judge Anup Kumar Roy passed the order granting a plea of the defendants, ex-mayor Halimul Haque Miru and others, accused of killing Abdul Hakim Shimul, Sirajganj correspondent of the daily Samakal.

Public prosecutor Entazul Haque Babu told New Age that the tribunal first set August 8 for framing the charges but deferred till August 18 following a plea by the defence lawyer seeking more time. On August 18, the tribunal deferred till 25 August 18 following another plea by the defence lawyer seeking more time.

‘On Sunday the defence lawyer once again requested the tribunal to defer the hearing on the ground that one of the 37 accused was arrested by police in Pabna under section 34 of the penal code’, he added.

He alleged that the defendants were intentionally trying to defer the charge framing of the case.

The tribunal also rejected the bail plea filed by suspended Shahjadpur municipal mayor Halimul Haque Miru for second times, he added.

Journalist Shimul was shot by Miru during a factional clash of ruling Awami League in the upazila headquarters on February 2 in 2017. He succumbed to his injury on the way to Dhaka, a day after the clash.

Shimul’s wife Nurunnahar Begum filed a murder case with the Shahjadpur police station accusing 18 people, including Sirajganj district Awami League organising secretary Halimul Haque Miru.

AL central committee suspended Halimul Haque Miru and Shahjadpur upazila AL member KM Nasir Uddin from the party, two days after the incident, for their alleged involvement in the killing.

Later, investigation officer of the case Monirul Islam submitted the charge sheet before Shahjadpur senior judicial magistrate court against 38 people including municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru.
