A security guard of Rupali Bank at its Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology branch was stabbed in his throat by suspected robbers early Friday.
The security guard, Liton, was admitted to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital after the incident in a critical condition.
‘The condition of the security guard is critical. He is kept at the intensive care unit of the hospital,’ said a physician at the hospital.
The branch manager Sowaibur Rahman said that he believed some unidentified people wearing masks broke into the bank’s gate, destroyed all the closed circuit cameras, and injured the guard in the throat with a knife just after midnight.
The CCTV footage of the bank’s vault, however, showed that a man, with his face covered, was trying to break the bank’s vault. The man left the scene after he failed to break the vault.
Liton, who fell unconscious after the injury called the manager when he returned to his senses at 6:00am, Sowaibur Rahman also added.
Police later visited the spot and gathered the 40 minutes CCTV footage where they saw a man attempting to break the bank’s vault between 12:00am and 12:40am, said Golam Ruhul Kuddus, additional deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
He said inspection of crime scene unit of Criminal Investigation Department and statement of the security guard indicates the robbery attempt was carried out by a single person.
Police were trying to identify the person, he added.
Meanwhile, a case was filed with Motihar Police Station in this connection.
Sub-inspector Abdur Rahman told New Age that bank manager Sowaibur Rahman filed a robbery case with the police station.
