Renowned essayist-poet Hayat Mahmud was felicitated at a programme held at the office of the publishing house Puthiniloy on Saturday.

Friends, well-wishers and peers greeted Mahmud at the programme, which was organised marking the poet’s 81st birthday that fell on July 2.

The programme commenced with a discussion.

Proprietor of Puthiniloy Shyamal Pal reminisced his memories with the eminent essayist.

‘Puthiniloy is privileged because Hayat Mahmud chose to work with us. Mahmud has helped Puthiniloy to reach another level,’ said Pal.

Followed by Pal’s speech, other guests at the event also recalled their memories with Mahmud. Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, Dhaka University fine arts faculty dean artist Nisar Hossain, poet Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam, Bulbul Chowdhury and writer Zakir Talukder, among  others, spoke at the event.

‘We come to this world for a short time. We should strive to spread love during our stay here. When we die all that remains is love,’ said Hayat Mahmud.

Hayat Mahmud started his career working at Bangla Academy and later worked at Russian publishing house Progoti as a translator.

He also taught Bangla language and literature at Jahangirnagar University from 1978 to 2004. Now-a-days he works as an adviser for the publishing house Puthiniloy.

Mahmud wrote several books for children and received the Bangla Academy Award for children’s literature in 2013 and the second highest civilian honour Ekushey Padak for his contribution to Bangla language and literature in 2016. Besides, he received Rabindra Puraskar in 2017 for his contribution to Tagore research.

His notable works are Choroi Chhana, a translation of Maxim Gorky’s book Little Sparrow, Gobet Gimpel, translation of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s work with the same title, Tales From Shakespeare, a translation of Charles and Mary Lamb’s work of the same name, Juddhoporadhir Shashti Chai and others.
