At least five fishermen went missing as three fishing trawlers capsized in the Bay of Bengal under Patuakhali’s Rangabali upazila area early Saturday due to inclement weather.
Missing fishermen were Rabin Hossain, 20, Md Hasan, 17, Mizan, 25, Monir, 40 and Saidul, 37. They were from different villages under the same upazila, Sohrab Pyada, one of the owners of the capsized trawlers said.
Rana Hawlader, Chalitabunia Union Parishad member, said the 38 fishermen went out to the bay about 5 days ago.
Early Saturday morning, the trawlers capsized during a storm and some 33 were rescued by other trawlers fishing nearby.
Rangabali police officer-in-charge Ali Ahmmed confirmed the news and said that they were trying their best to rescue the missing fishermen.
The trawlers are owned by Sohrab Pyada of village Modoya Charmontaj, Ratul Mia of village Koralia and Nizam Fakir of village Char Lata, all under Rangabali upazila.
‘After hearing about the missing trawlers, we sent a trawler to the bay to rescue the fishermen,’ said Nizam Fakir.
Rabiul Islam, contingent commander for Rangabali outpost of the Coast Guard said they had heard about the trawler capsize.
