A total of 43 containers loaded with imported goods plunged into the Bay of Bengal from a cargo vessel near Hatiya on Sunday morning amid inclement weather.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority Chattogram deputy director Mohammad Selim said that cargo vessel KSL Gladiator carrying the industrial goods in 83 containers was moving towards Pangaon container terminal in Keraniganj of Dhaka from Chattogram port.
The containers dropped from the ship, most probably because the sea was rough in the morning, he said.
The incident took place around 8:30am while the vessel was crossing Hatiya channel of Noakhali.
All the containers were seen floating towards Bhashan Char. BIWTA would put markings for safety, and all boats and ships were ordered to move carefully, he added.
Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and Chittagong Port Authority started recovery drive after the incident.
