Mohammadi Group managing director Rubana Huq has been elected president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association for the 2019-21 term.
The BGMEA election board on Thursday announced Rubana Haque as the president and seven others as the vice-presidents elected uncontested as there were no rival contestants for the posts.
As per the election schedule, Thursday was the day for submitting nomination papers for the election of the trade body’s office-bearers — a president, a first vice-president, a senior vice-president and five vice-presidents.
The newly elected first vice-president is Mohammed Abdus Salam, senior vice-president Faisal Samad and the vice-presidents are SM Mannan Kochi, MA Rahim, Arshad Jamal Dipu, Md Moshiul Azam Shajal and AM Chowdhury Selim.
Earlier, on April 6, Rubana Huq-led Sammilita Forum panel swept the biennial election to BGMEA, bagging all 35 director posts.
Just after the announcement of the names of the office-bearers, the first-ever female BGMEA president told New Age that she and her board would work with full honesty and integrity for the betterment of the sector.
‘If there is any lack of trust we will address the issue and we want to go forward with the support of all,’ she said.
There are many challenges in many areas, including in small and medium enterprises as well as the banking sector; the new board would work to address the issues, Rubana said.
The new BGMEA board is scheduled to take charge in a ceremony on April 21.
