Two young men, found dead near Masudpur frontier of Chapainawabganj on Tuesday, were killed by Indian Border Security Force, local people claimed.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Milon, 22, resident of village Tarapur Mandalpara, and Senarul Islam, 24, resident of village Tarapur Thutapara.
‘BSF troopers of Shovapur camp opened fire on a gang of smugglers who entered into India at about 3:00am. Milon died on the spot and Senarul suffered gunshot wounds,’ said local union parishad member Habibur Rahman.
Their associates brought Milon’s body and injured Senarul back from the border but the latter succumbed to his injuries, he said.
Police recovered Milon’s body from a bamboo orchard in Tarapur area and Senarul’s body from Chandshikari area, said officer-in-charge of Shibganj police Selim Reza.
BGB 53 battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Sazzad Sarwar said that the young men were members of a smuggling gang.
‘It is unclear whether they were killed in BSF firing or in an internal clash,’ he said.
‘We’re investigating the matter,’ he added.
