Dhaka University’s hall provosts on Tuesday demanded necessary actions against the teachers who voluntarily observed the central student and hall union polls of the university alleging that the teachers ‘tarnished the image of the university’.
They made the demand during a hall provost standing committee meeting held on Monday night, headed by vice-chancellor professor Akhtaruzzaman, said a university press release on Tuesday afternoon, which was signed by public relation officer Mahmud Alam.
Earlier on March 11, eight teachers of the university in a joint statement demanded cancellation of the election held on the day and urged the university authority to announce a fresh election schedule which, they claimed, was marred by widespread allegations of irregularities and rigging.
The teachers were Professor Geeti Ara Nasrin and Professor Fahmidul Haque of Dhaka University’s mass communication and journalism department, Professor Kamrul Hasan of physics, Associate Professor Tanjim Uddin Khan of international relations, Assistant Professor Rushad Faridi of economics, Professor Kazi Maruful Islam of development studies, Assistant Professor Tahmina Khanam of management and Associate Professor Atonu Rabbani of economics department of the university.
The press release read, ‘in the name of voluntary observers some teachers of the university visited polling centers without any permission and also circulated false and fabricated information in social media and others to defame the image of the university.’
In the press release, DU authorities also claimed that a vested quarter was trying to destabilise the peaceful atmosphere of the university by highlighting some isolated incidents.
One of the eight teachers Tanjim Uddin Khan of international relations said if the university authorities were saying that our information was false and fabricated, they would have to tell us on what basis they are saying this.
He further said that ‘hall provosts are usually appointed on the basis of their political beliefs, so they could not go beyond their political faith.’
The newly elected members of DUCSU and hall unions would begin their activities from March 23, the press release added.
Meanwhile, VC Akhtaruzzaman also appointed dean of business faculty of the university Professor Shibli Rubayat-ul-Islam as the treasurer of DUCSU 2019, according to section 6 (1) of the constitution, said another press release.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, brought out a protest procession at the Dhaka University campus alleging vote rigging at the central student and hall union polls of the university.
BCL-nominated Sammilita Shikkharthi Parishad panel swept the DUCSU polls securing all the posts of its 25-member executive committee except the VP and social services secretary positions.
In the 11 March DUCSU and hall union polls, BCL, the student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, won the full panel in most of the halls and secured 23 posts in the central union.
Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council-backed candidate Nurul Haq Nur was elected DUCSU VP while BCL panel-nominated Golam Rabbani won general secretary post.
