Newly elected Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Md Atiqul Islam today proposed the tagline — Love Dhaka — for the capital to create mass awareness to turn Dhaka into a resilient city.
‘We don’t need to follow examples of other cities. Let us make Dhaka an example for others,’ he said while speaking an international workshop at a hotel in the capital.
The workshop on ‘Towards Resilient Dhaka City’ was organised by the Dhaka North City Corporation, SEEDS Asia and the World Bank.
It was arranged to share experiences from the Urban Resilience Project-DNCC Part project supported by World Bank and the Capacity building for Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction in Urban Areas of Bangladesh project implemented by DNCC and SEEDS Asia supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The workshop also aimed to discuss the ways forward to make Dhaka a resilient city.
DNCC chief executive office Abdul Hai, chief engineer Brigadier General Md Jubayer Salehin, JICA country programme coordinator Naoki Matsumura, senior representative Yasuhiro Kawazoe, executive director of SEEDS Asia Yuko Nakagawa spoke community preparedness at the workshop.
Project director of URP-DNCC Tariq bin Yousuf, SEEDS Asia consultant Suvendrini Kakuchi and project coordinator Miharu Sato gave separate presentations.
Yuko emphasised that disaster in Japan had shown that community preparedness was the most important in saving lives. ‘The role of community based disaster risk reduction is the key to preventing and protecting people from urban disasters,’ she added.
Numbers of councillors of different wards of DNCC took part at the open discussion and gave their overview about role of communities in taking preparedness towards disasters like fire, earthquake and water logging.
