Traffic movement at the Saat Rasta Crossing in the capital came to a halt for one and half an hours on Thursday morning as several hundred garment workers put up a barricade on the street for a hike in their wages.
The workers of several garment factories, including those of Standard Group, took to the streets at about 8:00am, creating severe gridlock on the Mohakhali-Moghbazar Road and adjoining areas, said officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Industrial police Abdul Rashid.
The workers had been demonstrating for the last couple of days for salary hike, he added.
The workers took to the streets when they found the main gate of a factory closed in the morning.
City residents had to suffer immensely due to the heavy traffic during the rush hour.
Vehicular movement became normal at about 9:30am after police intervention.
