Police said Wednesday that they arrested two suspected murderers of two four-year old girls at Konapara, Demra in the capital Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, the National Human Rights Commission instituted probe into the cold blooded murders by a three-member committee led by its director for complaint and investigations Al Mahmud Faizul Kabir.
The committee was asked to submit its probe report within 24 hours, NHRC public relations officer Farhana Syead told New Age.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Wari Division Md Farid Uddin announced at a news briefing at DMP media centre that suspects of the murders, Golam Mostafa, 28, and his cousin Azizul Bawani, 30, had been arrested.
He said Mostafa was arrested at Demra and Aziz at Jatrabari.
On Monday night, Demra police recovered bodies of both the victims from a ground-floor flat of seven storied Nasima Villa at Konapara where Mostafa lives with wife and a kid.
The two victims lived at separate houses in the same locality.
The DMP deputy commissioner said that during primary quizzing the suspects told police that Mostafa brought the two little girls to his flat offering to make them up with lipstick.
The suspects admitted that Mostafa used his wife’s lipstick to make-up the kids and then he and his cousin took Yaba, and tried to rape them when the victims began to cry, said the police officer.
At this point Mostafa and Aziz played songs at high volume to hide what was happenings inside the flat and Aziz was first to strangulate a baby’s throat and Mostafa strangulated the other kid using a towel before Aziz fled from the crime scene.
Then Mostafa hid the bodies under a cot in his flat but he did not immediately disappear, said the DMP DC.
At night, on return from her work Mostafa’s wife found inconsistencies in her husband’s behaviour and the slippers of kids in their bed room quarrels ensued between them and neighbours gathered hearing their shouting, he said.
The neighbours informed police that from the quarrels they came to know that slippers of unknown kids were causing the couple’s quarrels, he said.
And Mostafa escaped before the police arrived at the scene, said the DMP DC.
The police’s suspicions are that the two cousins murdered the kids due to their perverted mindset and that drug addiction too could be a major reason, he said.
Demra police produced the two cousins at the court of metropolitan magistrate Jasim Uddin in the capital in a murder case filed by the father of one of the two victims, reported New Age court correspondent quoting court officials.
In the statements of the cousins recorded by the court they admitted their crimes, said court officials.
