A group of some 15 armed robbers looted valuables, including cash money and gold ornaments, worth about Tk 30 lakh of an expatriate-family on early Saturday in Sylhet.
Syed Shipon Alom Subla, son of late Syed Gias Uddin of Kuchai Mirabari at Dakkhin Surma upazila in the district, told reporters that two of his sisters and their family came from United Kingdom recently to attend the wedding ceremony of his youngest sister, scheduled on December 21.
He alleged that the robbers armed with firearms and daggers entered his house around 2:30am after breaking open a window of the kitchen room and had kept him and other members of his family hostage at gunpoint.
‘The robbers also assaulted two of my sisters as they delayed to give the keys of lockers,’ Subla said, adding that he was only adult man among 14 members of their joint family in the house when the robbers launched the attack.
The miscreants looted valuables, including more than 50 bhari gold ornaments, Tk 5 lakh and 300 starling pounds in cash, 5 i-phone sets, 3 tabs and 4 wristwatches, worth around Tk 30 lakh from the house, he claimed.
Subla told New Age that their relatives and neighbours detained one member of the robbers’ gang through tracking a looted i-phone at around 10:00am from Kushighat at Dakkhin Surma area in the city and recovered the phone from his possession.
‘The culprit was handed to police and a case was also filed with Moglabazar police in this regard at the noon,’ he added.
Moglabazar police officer-in-charge Abdul Kayum confirmed New Age of filing the case and said that they visited the spot immediately after receiving the news.
‘The detained man is being interrogated to identify the other members of the gang and to recover the looted goods,’ he said.
