Human rights organization Odhikar said Tuesday it was facing extreme repression and harassments by the government since 2013 for defending human rights.
In a statement, Odhikar reiterated its commitment to defend human rights as it celebrates its 24th founding anniversary today.
It was founded in 1994, keeping a just society based on rights and responsibilities of the State and the citizens in the vision, said the statement.
‘The government continues to harass Odhikar for being vocal against human rights violations and repressive laws. Despite facing persecution, harassment, non-renewal of its registration and the freezing of its bank accounts, Odhikar remains steadfast in its defense of human rights and justice,’ it said.
‘The Organisation is still operating due to the volunteer services of grassroots level human rights defenders associated with Odhikar and its members and staff; and their commitment to human rights activism,’ said the statement.
Odhikar releases a monthly status report highlighting repression and persecution of human rights defenders and dissenting voices; violation of rights to freedom of speech and expression, of peaceful assembly and of association; and acts of violence against women.
The Organisation ceaselessly campaigns against human rights violations, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, torture and degrading treatment, violations of ethnic and religious minority rights and violence against women in Bangladesh.
