Suspected robber killed in Rajbari ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police on the bank of river Garai at village Alankarpur under Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari early Monday.
The deceased, Bhadu Sheikh, in his forties, a resident of Gobinadapur village under Sadar upazila, was named in at least seven cases, mostly for robbery, police said.
Hasina Begum, officer-in-charge of Baliakandi Police Station, said on information that a group of robbers gathered on the bank of river Garai to commit robbery, a police team conducted a drive in the area.
Sensing the presence of police, she claimed, the suspected robbers opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate triggering the gunfight at about 2:30am.
As the ‘gunfight’ ended, she said, they found bullet-hit Bhadu Sheikh in a critical condition on the spot and took him to Baliakandi Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
OC Hasina said they seized two firearms, one bullet, five empty cartridges and a knife from the spot.
The resident medical officer of the upazila health complex Faruque Hossain said Bhadu was taken dead to the hospital sometimes after 3:15am.
He said that they found three marks of bullet injuries in his chest.
