‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ after arrest

A man arrested over robbery charges was killed in what police had claimed to be a gunfight between cops and the man’s accomplices at village Pattashi of Indurkani upazila in Pirojpur on early Sunday.
Indurkani Police Station officer-in-charge Nasir Uddin said deceased Zakir Hossain, in his fifties, of village Jolagati at Kawkhali in Pirojpur, was named in at least 11 cases, mostly for robbery, and was a leader of a gang of robbers.
He said they arrested Zakir in Khulna on Friday night in connection with a case filed over a robbery incident took place at five houses of village Ramchandrapur at Indurkani in January.
Cops, on information extracted from him, conducted a drive at village Pattashi to recover arms and to catch his accomplices, he said.
The OC said as they reached the village at about 2:20am, Zakir’s cohorts opened fire on police, prompting the police to retaliate by firing.
‘At one stage, Zakir tried to escape and was caught in an “encounter”,’ OC Nasir said
He said that they immediately took Zakir to Indurkani Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered a pipe gun and two bullets from the spot, he said.
