Defining young generation…

New Age Youth | Published: 00:00, Aug 05,2018

When mainstream media constantly trying to define youth as a particular consumer group buying targeted commodities, hanging out at coffee shops and playing video-games, how do this perceived consumer group define themselves. New Age Youth asked students to define the young generations, there answers simply do not comply with the logic of dominant representation of youth.

Today’s Youth Society is tomorrow’s hope! Who will be not only educated but well educated! Upon whom our country can rely for nesting a better society to live. As Young people are often considered to represent the future as they bring new ideas and energy to add to the pool of knowledge that currently exists. I believe that, merely being between age 15 to 25 doesn’t mean that person is a rising star of the society, a youth has to have the revolutionary spark inside him/her because only they can stand against taboo and stigmas of the society by implementing experiential knowledge to bring changes in social norms, customs and practices.

Do the youth of a society belong to a particular age group or category? Are they affluent or strapped? Are they trendy or backdated? Well, none of the answers to these questions can justify the authentic meaning of ‘youth’. The reason behind it is that youth is more of a spiritual power; a power that exceeds beyond any limitations. It is a power that intrigues people to fight against injustice, to dream and to impose the dream into reality. For instance, the students and people, fighting to get justice for two college student’s death caused by reckless bus driving, are the embodiment of youth in our country.

Actually there is no universal standard of defining youth. Some people say that youth is more of a state of the mind than a definite age frame. However, ‘youth’ is best understood as a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood’s independence. In the ‘National Youth Policy-2017’ of Bangladesh, the particular age range of youth is 18-35 years. For activities at the national level or in case of implementing a local community youth program, youth age range is understood by UNESCO as between the ages of 15-35 years. In my personal understanding, ‘youth’ means the present as well as future generation of a nation. To me, youth is the synonymous word of strength, courage, innovation, progress, hope, ambition, taking stand against atrocities and injustice and positive changes.

YOUTH is what we have been experiencing on the roads of Dhaka city for last three or four days. They want justice peacefully, not by rubber bullet, not by tear gas. They want justice by checking car license. They stopped minister’s car for using wrong side, they even stopped many other top officials for not carrying license and car papers while driving. For the first time in Bangladesh, today, we have seen emergency line on the road of Dhaka City and ambulances are getting priority for this designated line. That’s called the youth, who can change anything in anytime in anywhere and we want to see the power of this youth in our society, in our country.

I would like to define youth as — who are in the best period of life, and spend it to raise voice against social injustices and discriminations. In any circumstances, this generation has the potential to make revolutionary changes in a state by investing their vigorous commitment and honesty. With this in mind, there is no specific age for a person to be youth, rather, this is an idea which incorporates all the goodness and zeal to change the existing system and create something for the betterment of the society.

Youth is generally considered the age of between childhood and adulthood. It can also be define other way-a significant part of citizen of country who has firm commitment of newness by breaking the motionless rules of the society. Youths aren't just only those who fit the age criteria, rather, those who are constructive role in forming an ideal state can also be considered as youth. In my opinion, in order to achieve a sustainable environment for the community, those who work with their heart and confidence are youth.
