At least four more suspected drug peddlers were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with the law enforcement agencies in Kushtia, Natore and Keraniganj on the capital’s outskirts since Tuesday night.
At least two peddlers were killed allegedly in ‘gunfight’ with the Rapid Action Battalion at Kushtia and one was killed at Natore also in ‘gunfight’ with RAB while one was killed at Keraniganj in separate ‘gunfight’ with the police, according to RAB and the police.
The latest casualties increased the death toll in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive to 179 since May 15.
Most of them were killed in ‘gunfights’ with the police and the RAB.
At Kushita, suspected drug peddlers, Phutu alias Monna, 35, son of Ahmed Ali, and his nephew Russel Ahmed, 30, son of Rabiul Islam, of Rajarhat, were killed in ‘gunfight’ with the RAB at Katdah Char under Mirpur in the district early Wednesday, RAB-12 commanding officer Md Mohaiminul said.
He said that the duo was top drug dealers according to the list of suspected drug peddlers prepared by the home ministry.
He said that RAB recovered two firearms, 12 bullets, 1500 Yaba tablets, 230 bottles of Phensedyl and 40 litre of liquor from the spot.
In Natore, suspected drug peddler Osman Goni was killed in ‘gunfight’ with RAB-5at Bahimali area under Baraigram in the district at about 11:45pm on Tuesday, said Major Shiblee Mostafa of RAB-5.
At Keraniganj, Nur Hossain Nuru, 35, a suspected
drug peddler and also wanted in 12 criminal cases, was killed in ‘gunfight’ with the Detective Branch of police near Diamond Melamine Factory at Deushur under Keraniganj upazila on Wednesday 3:00am, United News of Bangladesh reported, quoting Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of DB police.
The DB OC said that they also seized a firearm and 35 Yaba tablets from the spot.
In 24 hours ending Wednesday 6:00am, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 87 suspected drug peddlers and addicts from different places of the capital, DMP officials said.
The police arrested at least 21,883 suspected drug peddlers and addicts across the country between May 18 and June 21, according to officials at police headquarters who also said that the anti-drug drives was going on.
The RAB arrested 6,794 suspects between May 4 and June 24 and 4,891 drug peddlers and addicts were jailed and fined through mobile courts, RAB officials said.
