Investigators failed to make headway in the disappearance of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s former organising secretary M Ilias Ali six years ago.
Ilias, also a former MP and the former president of Sylhet BNP, together with his private car driver Ansar Ali disappeared from near his residence at Banani in Dhaka on April 17, 2012.
Investigators are yet to confirm whether the leader was pick up or went into hiding.
His family members and party leaders are not sure about his fate.
Ilias’s wife Tahsina Rushdir Luna, also deputy registrar of the Dhaka University, told New Age that they were passing days amid an uncertainty.
She said that she recorded a general diary with the Banani police after disappearance of her husband, but the police did not took any effort to locate the whereabouts of Ilias.
Mentioning the High Court order to the law-enforcers to keep the court undated with the latest effort in finding out the disappeared BNP leader and his car driver, she said that the law-enforcers stopped maintaining the court directive after several months.
‘I still believe that Ilias will return one day,’ Luna added.
Leaders of the BNP and its associate organisations on Tuesday blamed the government for not taking any sincere step to rescue Ilias Ali.
Addressing a rally in the Sylhet city on Tuesday, they alleged that the Awami League-backed government has disappeared Ilias Ali as part of its bid to stop protests against it on different national issues, including the Indian government’s move to construct Tipaimukh Dam in the upper region of Surma and Kushiara rivers—two major rivers in Sylhet region, northeast part of the country.
The government’s utter indifference to locate the whereabouts of Ilias Ali proved its involvement in the incident of disappearing him, they claimed while addressing the rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city in the afternoon.
Ilias Mukti Sangram Parishad, a BNP-backed platform seeking steps to recover Ilias, and the city unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, volunteers’ front of the BNP, and the party’s student organisation, Chhatra Dal, jointly organised the programme.
Swechchhasebak Dal city convener Farhad Chowdhury Shamim presided over the rally that was addressed, among others, by BNP central unit assistant organising secretary Dildar Hossain Selim, city unit president Nasim Hossain, its vice-president Saleh Ahmad Khasru, Rezaul Hasan Lodi Kayes and Samia Begum Chowdhury, district vice-president Jalal Uddin and Luthful Haq Khokan, district general secretary Ali Ahmed and organising secretary Abdul Ahad Khan Jamal.
