Delimitation of constituencies sparks protests in Comilla

Local people and students of Hasanpur Shaheed Nazrul Government Degree College blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in front of the college at Hasanpur of Daudkandi in Comilla on Wednesday in protest at the recent delimitation of Comilla-1 and 2 parliamentary constituencies.
They demanded that the Election Commission should scrap the draft plan of delimitation keeping the present boundary intact.
The EC redesigned Comilla-1 with Daudkandi and Titas upazilas earlier it was with Daudkandi and Meghna upzilas and Comilla-2 with Homna and Meghna upzilas which was with Homna and Titas upazilas.
After an hour-long blockade, Daudkandi upazila chairman Mohammad Ali Sumon persuaded the protesters into quitting the demonstration by assuring them of earliest possible steps in this regard.
On March 14, the EC announced that it had tentatively re-demarcated 38 parliamentary constituencies in 16 districts keeping administrative integrity in the view.
