The government has decided to procure three lakh tonnes of husked Aman rice from the local markets at Tk 33 per kilogram, said food minister Qamrul Islam.
The purchase of Aman rice will start from December 1 and it will continue until March 15, he told reporters after a meeting of the food planning and monitoring committee at the Secretariat.
Qamrul Islam said that the government decided to procure rice at Tk 33 per kg estimating that its production cost was of Tk 29
There is sufficient stock of rice in the country, he said.
Last year, the government had procured two lakh tonnes of husked Aman rice at Tk 31 per kg from December to March, said officials comncerned.
Presided over by food minister, the meeting was attended by finance minister Abul MAl Abdul Muhith, commerce minister Tofael Ahmed and agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury..
Accordinmg to Department of Agricultural Extension, farmers had cultivated Aman rice on 55.51 lakh hectares of land with a target to produce 135.44 lakh tonnes for the current season.
When asked, DAE deputy director (monitoring) Mohammad Abduhu told New Age on Sunday that farmers had already harvested 65 per cent Aman across the country.
Within first week of December, the Aman harvest would be completed, he said.
Aman rice cultivation in Bangladesh has been hampered this year due to floods, causesd by onsrish of water from upstream India in August, said agriculturaists.
