Dhaka University Institute of Modern Language director Professor Shishir Bhattacharya on Monday said that Bangla becomes merely a de jure state language as the government was yet to take any steps to use Bangla as mandatory in all courts, offices and educational institutes in the country.
He said that language veterans struggled to make Bangla as a state language but now Bangla became an ornamental state language.
He said these while addressing a discussion titled ‘First Confucius Institute Forum in Bangladesh’ organised jointly by Confucius Institute of Dhaka University and North South University held at the auditorium of Institute of Modern Language of Dhaka University.
North South University Institute of Modern Language director Khaliquzzaman M Elias, Turkish language student Mehedi Hasan, Confucius Institute of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology teacher Akash, among others, addressed the programme.
Meanwhile, Linguistics department of Dhaka University also organised a daylong seminar at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the university marking International Mother Language Day.
