Pagla Kanai’s 128th death anniv observed

The 128th death anniversary of rural bard and mystic folk singer Pagla Kanai was observed through day-long programmes at the bard’s home village Berbari in Jhenaidah on Wednesday.
The programmes commenced with placing of floral wreaths at the bust of the poet. Different programmes including milad mahfil, cultural shows and discussions were held throughout the day.
Deputy director of local government rural development Abu Yusuf Mohammad Rezaur Rahman, deputy commissioner, also the president of Pagla Kanai Sriti Sangrakkhan Sangsad, Mohammad Jakir Hossain, general Secretary of Pagla Kani Sriti Sangrakkhan Sangsad advocate Abdur Rashid, additional district magistrate Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Jhenaidah district council secretary Reza E Rafin Sarker, additional superintendent of police Azbahar Ali Shaikh were present at the inaugural session of the day-long programmes.
Local artistes entertained the audience by singing folk songs composed by Kanai.
Kanai, widely known as Pagla Kanai was born on 18 March, 1809. He penned and sang diverse genre songs like Jari, Dhua, Pala Gaan, Kobi Gaan, Murshidi, Marfati and Islamic songs. He was notable for developing a Jari form, called Dhuajari, in which an incident is narrated in a rhythmic tone.
