Chittagong Abahani ended the dream run of Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society as the beat the old-Dhaka outfits by a solitary goal to seal the final berth of the Federation Cup for the first time in history on Friday.
Mamunul Islam, the veteran midfielder, scored the all important goal in the eighth minute in the match that was mostly dominated by Rahmatganj but lack of finishing compelled them to bid an adieu to the tournament.
Chittagong Abahani on the other hand reached a major tournament final for the second time after last year Independence Cup, where they tasted their maiden major title in domestic arena.
The Chittagong side offered strong resistance to stop a quick-move Rahmatganj who made some continuous attacks in the late stage of the game.
Chittagong Abahani goalie Mohammed Nehal was their savoir as he produced some outstanding performances to allow his side leave the field as winners.
Mamun, the national team captain, found a neat cutback form Nigerian team mate Afeez Oladipo in the eighth minute and made no mistake to send the ball home past Rahmatganj goalie Mohammad Razib.
After conceding the goal, Rahmatganj seemed more eager to make a quick return but their all-out attacks throughout the game went in vain.
Forward Rashedul Islam Shuvo missed a great chance to equalise the margin in the 19th minute when his shot went wide following a one-on-one with Chittagong keeper Nehal.
Rahmatganj wasted another great chance in the 67th minute when Faisal Ahmed found a precise through from midfielder Mohammad Saddam and broke the penalty area only to see his effort was brilliantly saved by Nehal.
Rahmatganj continued their attacking spree and made a couple of quick attacks a minute later but Nehal was impregnable on the day.
Nehal’s brave effort continued as he blocked a powerful placing of substitute forward Mohammad Helal just three minutes before the final whistle.
Chittagong Abahani will face the winners of today’s second semi-final between reigning champions Abahani Limited and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the final that is scheduled to be held on Monday.
