Bangladesh’s apparel export to the United States in January-May of 2021 grew by 15.38 per cent to $2.58 billion from $2.24 billion in the same period of 2020, according to the US Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel data released on Friday.
Exporters said that the country’s readymade garment export to the US started rebounding after suffering the Covid pandemic shocks.
They said that a massive vaccination helped the US to contain the outbreak of coronavirus and the economy of the nation was recovering.
The US has reopened its business and the consumers’ turnout in stores has started increasing as the infection rate has come down.
According to the OTEXA data, apparel export to the US, the largest export destination for Bangladesh, in May 2021 increased to $587.95 million from $166.58 million in the same month of 2020.
‘Bangladesh’s export to the US market will increase more in the coming months as the economy of the destination is recovering from the shock of Covid-19,’ Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association vice-president Md Shahidullah Azim told New Age on Saturday.
He said that Bangladesh’s apparel export to the US started rebounding for the last two months as the US shifted some orders from China and at the same time production was interrupted in India due to a high rate of infection.
The data showed that the total apparel import by the US from different countries in the first five months of 2021 increased by 22.19 per cent to $29.22 billion from $23.91 billion in the same period of the previous year.
The US apparel import from China in January-May of 2021 grew by 26.17 per cent to $5.82 billion from $4.61 billion in the same period of the previous year.
Vietnam’s RMG export to the US in the five months of 2021 grew by 19.48 per cent to $5.74 billion from $4.81 billion in the same period of 2020.
RMG import by the US from Cambodia in January-May of 2021 increased by 15.35 per cent to $1.24 billion from $1.07 billion in the same period of the previous year, the data showed.
US apparel import from India in the five months of 2021 increased by 21.95 per cent to $1.73 billion from $1.42 billion in the same period of 2020, the data showed.
