Pabna Awami League leader Farooq Hossain deposited his two licenced guns in Pabna Sadar Police Station on Sunday a day after a video footage of Farooq and Municipal AL organising secretary AR Khan Mamun entering Pabna Public Works Department office with guns went viral drawing huge criticisms on social media.

PWD employees said that they got scared when a group of contractors, who are also leaders of local Awami League, entered the office with weapon.

A public works official, who did not want to be named, said the leaders-turned-contractors often try to control tenders for various works by intimidating officers and employees.

Pabna PWD executive engineer Anwarul Azim said that he was out of office on June 6 and employees later told him that the leader did not misbehave with anybody in the office.

Faruk Hossain, science and technology affairs secretary of Pabna sadar upazila Awami League, municipal Awami League organising secretary AR Khan Mamun and district Juba League convening committee member Sheikh Lalu went to the office at about 12 noon for collecting construction work bills.

Faruk said he was not a contractor of PWD, but Mamun and Lalu took him there to talk about their bills.

‘We should not have gone there that way,’ he said.

Pabna additional superintendent of police Snigdha Akhtar said that none had complained against the leaders, but the officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station informed him that Faruk had deposited two guns in Sadar Police Station and admitted their mistakes.

Advocate Abdul Ahad Babu, office secretary of Pabna district Awami League, said they summoned Faruk who said that he carried the guns for his own safety and not for threatening anybody.

Pabna superintendent of police Mahibul Islam Haque Khan said that they were investigating the incident and no one should be above the law.
