Companyganj Upazila Awami League organising secretary Mizanur Rahman Badal was injured in an attack allegedly by his rivals Saturday afternoon.
Mizanur blamed followers of Basurhat Municipality mayor Abdul Quader Mirza for the attack.
Four followers of Mizanur were also injured in police shooting as they brought out a rally to protest at the attack on Mizanur, barricaded road and clashed with the police.
Upazila Awami League spokesperson Mahbubur Rahman Monju announced a 48-hour general strike in the upazila in protest against the attack on Mizanur.
Local people said that the attack on Mizanur took place at around 9:00am when he was heading towards Dhaka on his private vehicle.
As the car reached Basurhat bazaar, 40-50 followers of Quader Mirza, a brother of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, carried out the attack on Mizanur, beat him and vandalised the vehicle, alleged Mahbubur.
Mizanur was rushed to Companyganj Upazila Health Complex.
After providing primary treatment, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
As the news of the attack spread, Mizanur’s supporters blocked roads in Tekerhat bazar, Peshkarhat Road, Char Elahi and Charfakira areas of the upazila and set fire on the road.
The police barred them from the road blockade and a clash between the supporters of Mizanur and the police broke out.
Four supporters of Miznur sustained bullet injuries in police firing, said Mahbubur, an associate of Mizanur.
Saifuddin Anwar, officer-in-charge of the Companyganj police station, said that they went to Tekerhat Bazar to convince the protestors to withdraw the road blockade but they hurled brickbats on the police.
The police fired 30-35 rounds from shotguns.
Four cops were injured in the attack, the OC said.
Quader Mirza, however, denied their involvement in the attack, saying that he does not have any idea about the attack.
Quader Mirza has been a fierce critic of Obaidul Quader for the past few months and there have been several factional clashes between the municipality mayor and his rivals.
Mizanur is reportedly close to Obaidul Quader.
