The Awami League on Saturday selected candidates for the by-elections to parliamentary seats of Dhaka14, Sylhet3 and Cumilla5 on July 28.
The nominations were finalised at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board headed by AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina, said an AL press release.
It said that the board, preferred AL Shah Ali Thana unit president Aga Khan Mintu for Dhaka-14 constituency, Sylhet district unit AL member Habibur Rahman for Sylhet-3 and Burichang Upazila unit AL president Abul Hashem Khan for Cumilla-5 by-elections.
Sylhet-3 seat fell vacant following Awami League member of parliament Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury’s death on March 11, Dhaka-14 following AL MP Aslamul Hoque’s death on April 4, and Cumilla-5 fell vacant after AL MP Abdul Matin Khasru’s death on April 14.
According to the constitution, by-elections to fill a vacant seat of an MP should be held within 90 days.
