Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday said that he would not allow any structure on city playgrounds, parks and other open spaces.
He said so while addressing reporters after inaugurating Sheheed Seikh Rasel Park at Jatrabari in Dhaka.
He said that he wrote against the construction of a building grabbing open space for the Rapid Action Battalion at Ward 11.
‘I will not accept any structure on parks and playgrounds. I hope that they will backtrack from the initiative,’ he said.
Taposh also said that city people were getting the benefit of drainage management improvement by the city corporation.
‘People are getting better benefits but improvements are yet to be complete,’ Taposh said.
The mayor said that the south city corporation had taken a massive plan at three levels — short term, mid-term and long-term — to address the waterlogging.
The corporation was doing all short-term activities, including cleaning the drainage and connecting them to canals and then, rivers to drain out the rain water.
‘The south city corporation has started a Tk 103 crore development programme to do mid-term development projects, including infrastructure development and expansion of water-carrying bodies,’ he said, adding that the DSCC also took a master plan.
Taposh claimed that short-term plans gave city people big reliefs while mid and long-term plans would give people a full relief.
DSCC councillors, local Awami League leaders and top officials of the DSCC were among others with him during his visit.
