At least 20 people were injured, including nine sustaining bullet shots, in a clash between the ruling Awami League and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party at Muradnagar of Narsingdi Sadar upazila on Sunday.
Several houses were attacked, vandalised and robbed during the clash.
Local people said that Alokbali union AL secretary Asad Ali and the union BNP secretary Ayub Ali had long-standing dispute.
Associates of the both leaders had a quarrel over the possession of a shop at the local market a week ago.
Tensions between the two sides had been simmering in the area for the past one week.
Both groups locked in the clash on Sunday with locally made sharp weapons and firearms. The bullet-injured are Anis Molla, Sadeque Molla, Amir Molla, Mohammad Ali, Himel, Md Tapan, Amir Ali, Monir Mia.
The nine victims were being treated at various clinics including Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and hospitals in the capital.
Narsingdi sadar police officer-in-charge Biplob Kumar Dutta Chowdhury said the clashes took place due previous hostilities. Police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area to deal with the situation.
