The government has taken an initiative to include water transport workers engaged in carrying passengers under the one-time cash assistance programme amid the Covid outbreak, said finance ministry officials on Sunday.
Details of water transport workers have already been collected by the Finance Division, said additional secretary Nazma Mobarek.
The list has been prepared in association with the Bangladesh Inland Transport Authority and deputy commissioners across the country, she said.
Each worker would be given Tk 2,500 cash assistance for once through mobile financial services.
Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation president Md Shah Alam Bhuiyan said that they had already given a list of 50,000 workers to the BIWTA.
The workers are linked to carrying passengers on 3,800 kilometres of year-round-navigable waterways and almost 6,000 kilometres of rainy season-navigable waterways, he said.
Earlier, the government decided to provide one- time cash assistance to around 40 lakh informal sector workers.
The finance Division has recently disbursed around Tk 100 crore to pay cash assistance to around 2,00,542 teachers and employees of private schools outside of the monthly payment order system under 7,000 educational institutions in the country.
Each teacher of non-MPO schools and educational institutions will be given a one-time cash assistance of Tk 5,000 and an employee Tk 2,500 through the electronic fund transfer by the Finance Division.
Educational institutions have been closed since March 18, 2020 due to the Covid outbreak which left many teachers of private schools to face financial problems.
