The Police on Wednesday arrested Hefazat-e-Islam leader Jakaria Noman Faizy at Cox’s Bazar for his alleged involvement in recent violence during anti-Modi protests at Hathazari in Chattogram.
District detective branch arrested Jakaria in the afternoon, said SM Rashidul Hoque, superintendent of Chattogram district police.
With the latest arrest, a total of 125 leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam have so far been arrested in cases filed with Hathazari, Patiya and Rangunia police stations, the SP said.
Jakaria, the immediate past publicity secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, was named in several cases including former Hefazat chief Ahmad Shafi’s death case, according to the police.
Earlier on April 29, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Hefazat leader Harun Izhar at Chattogram city’s Lalkhanbazar for his alleged involvement in recent violence.
On Monday, a Chattogram court granted a total nine-day remand to Harun Izhar in three cases filed in 2021 and 2020.
On Tuesday, Hathazari police arrested Md Arif, science and technology affairs secretary of Hathazari municipality unit and Tazul Islam, assistant Dawah affairs secretary of Hathazari upazila committee of Hefazat-e-Islam, said the SP.
