A woman died after falling from a rickshaw when snatchers pulled her bag from a moving car in Kamalapur area of the capital city on Wednesday.
The victim is Sunita Rani Das, 50.
The incident occurred at around 6:00am in front of Kamalapur BRTC Bus Depot in Dhaka.
Sunita Rani was a resident of Rishipara at Gopibagh and worked as a cleaner at a Buddhist Monastery at Bashabo.
She was the wife of Sujan Das, a native of Tangail’s Gopalpur upazila and the mother of three children, her relatives said.
Sunita’s nephew Sanjit Das said that they were heading to their workplaces in a rickshaw in the morning. As the rickshaw reached the BRTC Bus Depot area, a private car began chasing them.
The muggers inside the moving car snatched Sunita’s hand bag, causing her to fall off the rickshaw and become seriously injured. Sanjit sustained minor injuries.
Sunita was first rushed to Mugda General Hospital and shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at around 12:00pm, said Bachchu Miah, inspector at DMCH police outpost.
Motijheel police station sub-inspector Mizanur Rahman said that they had sent teams to the spot and conducting raids to arrest the muggers.
On February 29, 2020, a woman died after falling from a rickshaw during a similar mugging incident when muggers tried to snatch her bag on Bishwa Road in Dhaka’s Mugda area.
