Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday assaulted a group of Rajshahi University teachers, who were demonstrating on the campus for the removal of vice-chancellor M Abdus Sobhan and pro-vice-chancellor Choudhury M Zakaria.
The BCL leaders and activists attacked the demonstrating teachers when the teachers were trying to enter the vice-chancellor’s residence to foil the vice-chancellor’s alleged attempt to appoint officers and employees on an ad-hoc basis in his last syndicate meeting.
The last syndicate meeting of the VC, whose tenure will end on May 6, was scheduled to take place at his residence from 10:30am on Tuesday.
Alleging that the VC was trying to recruit officers and employees in the meeting defying the government’s ban on all types of recruitment, the demonstrating teachers led by Professor Sultan-ul-Islam tried to enter the VC’s residence at about 09:45am.
However, the ruling Awami League’s student wing former leaders and activists from the university unit along with local activists prevented the teachers from entering the VC’s residence, and exchanged hot words.
At one stage, the BCL men pushed the teachers back after a scuffle had ensued between them.
About 30 minutes later, the demonstrating teachers again tried to enter the VC’s residence but the BCL men again got engaged in a scuffle to push them back.
A BCL activist named Akash from village Meherchandi, located near the university campus, even threatened to shoot the teachers in presence of the proctor and law enforcement personnel.
At about 10:45am against the backdrop of such demonstrations, registrar Professor M Abdus Salam announced that the vice-chancellor postponed Tuesday’s syndicate meeting for unavoidable reasons.
