A fire broke out at the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans on Monday.

Fire service Sarankhola station officer Abdus Sattar around 8:45pm told New Age that the fire that broke out around 12:00pm in Daser Bharani area under Sharankhola Range of Sundarban East forest division could not be put out.

‘We fight against the fire between 12:00pm and 7:00pm but could not douse it. It is not safe to continue operation at the deep forest at night,’ he said adding that they would again start operation today.

The fire might have started due to the hot weather, he said.

Forest officials said that the fire covered half square kilometre area.

They said that to prevent the fire from spreading in the forest, they started cutting fire canals around the fire.
