Covid-19 kills 98 more in Bangladesh

Covid-19 killed 98 more people and infected 4,014 others in the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Thursday.

In the past five days, the Directorate General of Health Services recorded 498 Covid deaths with a daily average of nearly 100 deaths whereas in the past week, 622 people died of the disease with a daily average of 89.

With the latest figures, the country’s Covid death toll reached 10,781 and the number of cases rose to 7,36,074, according to the DGHS.

The DGHS in its daily update on Thursday said that 27,429 samples were tested across the country in the past 24 hours and 14.63 per cent of them were found to be positive for Covid-19.

The test positivity rate has come down for the last few days from over 23 per cent in early April.

The DGHS said that among the 98 people died in the past 24 hours, six died at home.

In the past five days, 22 Covid patients died outside hospitals including 20 at home and two on the way to hospitals.

In the past week, 31 Covid patients died outside hospitals including 26 at home and five on the way to hospitals as the country witnessed a sudden spike in Covid deaths and cases.

The country on Monday recorded 112 Covid deaths, the highest daily deaths since the coronavirus cases w detected in the country on March 8, 2020. The DGHS said that among the new deaths, 55 were in Dhaka division, 20 in Chattogram, six in Rajshahi, five each in Khulna and Mymensingh, four in Sylhet and three in Rangpur.

Fifty-nine of the deceased were above 60 years of age while 20 were  between 51 years and 60 years, 14 between 41 years and 50 years, two between 31 years and 40 years, one  between 21 years and 30 years and two between 11 years and 20 years.

The country’s overall test positivity rate now stands at 13.95 per cent and the fatality rate 1.46 per cent.

On Thursday, the country had 82,844 active cases.
