A Khulna court on Wednesday sent a journalist to judicial custody following his arrest on Tuesday in a case filed by Khulna city mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque under the Digital Security Act.
‘NTV’s Khulna bureau chief Abu Tayeb was arrested on Tuesday night at his home in the case the mayor filed in the evening,’ said Khulna Sadar Police Station sub-inspector GM Moniruzzaman.
He said that metropolitan magistrate Tariqul Islam sent Tayeb to judicial custody after he was placed before the online court on Wednesday morning.
He said that Khaleque, also Khulna metropolitan unit president of ruling Awami League, filed the case against Tayeb and local daily Loksamaj’s Rampal upazila correspondent for their Facebook posts.
In their posts, the journalists complained about some corruptions committed by the mayor, said Moniruzzaman.
Khaleque told New Age that he prosecuted the journalists as their posts had damaged his image.
‘They alleged in their Facebook posts that I am a managing director of an export-import-related company, but I am not,’ he added.
