A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Tuesday placed model and actress Romana Islam Swarna, 40, on a one-day police remand in connection with a fraud case.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mamunur Rashid granted the remand after police had applied for a seven-day remand to quiz her, said investigation officer of the case and Mohammadpur police inspector Dulal Hossain.
The defense counsel, however, argued for bail, but the court rejected his argument and placed her on the police remand.
Romana, her mother Ashrafi Islam Shelly and son Annafi have accused of swindling a Saudi expatriate out of about Tk 1.5 crore through a fraudulent marriage.
The police arrested the three over the allegation at Lalmatia on March 11.
The Saudi expatriate Kamrul Islam filed a case against actress Romana and six others on charges of cheating and embezzling money through a fraudulent marriage.
The police, then, also asked the court’s permission to quiz her into their custody during remand, but the court instructed the police to quiz her at the jail gate.
