Government begins to relax flight restriction

Domestic flights except on Cox’s Bazar route to resume today

The government began to relax restrictions on the flight gradually it allowed on Tuesday the resumption of Bangladesh-China flight operation and domestic flight operation on all but Cox’s Bazar routes from today.  

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh issued a notification stating that it decided to allow flights of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US Bangla Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines to operate passenger flights between Dhaka and China on their approved destinations under special consideration.

The authority said that the decision was made at a meeting on April 16 and would come into effect immediately and remain valid until April 28 if not extended further.

It also set some regulations, including carrying only point to point passengers.

US-Bangla Airlines general manager for public relations Kamrul Islam said that they were set to resume their flight operation on Dhaka-Guangzhou route from April 24 with special permission.

The private airlines would primarily operate one flight a week on the route.

The government suspended the operation of all international passenger flights to and from Bangladesh for a week from April 14 to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The government on April 15 allowed airlines to operate flights on five destinations — Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Singapore.

CAAB chairman Air Vice-Marshal M Mafidur Rahman told New Age that they already allowed Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla and Novoair operation on all domestic but Cox’s Bazar routes considering overall situation.

He said they also set some regulations for the resumption of the flights.

The decision has been made as many outbound-passengers are suffering to reach out to the airport for their travel to abroad while many executives cannot fly to their destinations due movement restrictions, he said.

Each of the operator will be able to fly daily three flights to Chattogram, two each flights to Sylhet, Jashore and Siadpur and one each to Barishal and Rajshahi.

Novoair, senior manwager marketing and sales AKM Mahfuzul Alam said that they were told to set slot for only 10 flights a day except on Cox’s Bazar route and the operation would resume from today.

According to the Novoair, the airlines could operate three flights on Dhaka-Chattogram routes while two each on Dhaka-Jashore, Dhaka-Saidpur and  Dhaka-Sylhet routes and only a daily flight on Dhaka-Barishal route.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla also announced their flight scheduled.

On April 3, the authority decided to suspend all domestic flights in Bangladesh from April 5 in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.
