At least two people were killed and 20 other ones injured in sporadic clashes between two groups of villagers over establishing supremacy at village Lundia under Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj district on Saturday.
Besides, over a dozen houses were vandalized during the clashes as the groups also attacked and vandalised their rivals’ houses, police and villagers said.
The deceased were Sheikh Makbul, 40, and Sheikh Pabel, 28, of the village.
Injured Khairul, 36, Iqbal Mia, 30, Bipasha, 28, Shefali, 30, Hriday Mia, 24, Muchha Mia, 40, Shefali, 35, and Kala Mia, 45, who were admitted to the upazila health complex were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment as their condition was deteriorating.
Bhairab police station inspector Quazi Mahfuz Hasan Siddique told New Age that two rival groups– one of Sheikh locality and the other of Shikder locality – of Lundia village locked in a clash at about 9:30am over establishing supremacy.
The clash continued until 1:30pm when police reached the spot and brought the situation under control, he said.
He said that the clashes were sporadic and the groups, armed with sticks and sharp weapons, swooped on each other and vandalized houses of their rivals.
Makbul died at about 10:00am while Pabel died at about 12:15pm while they had been clashing with their rivals, police officials said, adding that at least 15 houses were attacked.
Inspector Mahfuz said that they found at least 20 injured ones, including more than half with serious injuries, and took them to the upazila hospital from where seriously injured ones were referred to MMCH for better treatment.
The police officer said that police forces were deployed in the village to avoid any further untoward incident.
No case was lodged until 10:15pm, Mahfuz said.
