The Detective Branch arrested Dhaka city unit Hefazat-e-Islam vice-president Maulana Jubayer at his Lalbagh residence on Friday afternoon.
Jubayer was arrested on charges of his involvement in Shapla Chattar violence on May 5, 2013, said DB Motijheel division deputy commissioner Asaduzzaman.
The Hefazat leader is also involved in recent violent acts carried out by the group, said the DB officer adding that Jubayer will be produced before a court with remand prayers on Saturday.
Earlier, the police arrested Hefazat central organising secretary Azizul Haque Islamabadi, assistant secretary general Sakhawat Hossein Raji, central committee assistant secretary general Manjurul Islam and assistant-publicity secretary Mufti Sharifullah in Dhaka over last few days.
They were shown arrested in cases related to Shapla Chattar violence on May 5, 2013.
