A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Wednesday remanded Chhatra Odhikar Parishad president Akhtar Hossain in the custody of the Detective Branch of the police for two days.
Metropolitan magistrate Mamunur Rashid passed the order after hearing an application filed by DB subinspector Saiful Islam Khan producing Akhter, also a master’s student of law at the Dhaka University, before the court seeking him in custody for seven days for interrogation.
The police told the court that they arrested Akhter, also former social services secretary of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, at the Central Shahid Minar Tuesday evening.
The police said that Akhtar was arrested in case filed against him and i9 others with Shahbagh police station on March 25 by Paltan police station subinspector Raihan Kabir on charge of attempting to snatch parishad activist Abul Kalam Azad from police’s custody on March 25.
Abul Kalam was arrested in a case filed with Motijheel police station on March 25 and he was brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Manir sought bail for Akhtar opposing the remand prayer.
