Police on Friday night arrested a man for torturing a 13-year-old boy tying him with a tree alleging that the boy had stolen fish from a pond at Charghat upazila in Rajshahi.
The arrestee is Jahirul Islam, a pond owner in Meramatpur area of the upazila.
Local people said that Jahirul tied the 13-year-old teenager with a tree on the bank of a pond near Marmamatpur Primary School in the upazila on Friday noon, and tortured him for over an hour.
Jahirul also captured photos of the boy and posted them on his Facebook page.
Later, the local people rescued the teenager and rushed him to the Charghat Upazila Complex Hospital.
The teenager’s father told New Age that Jahirul tied his son to a tree and tortured him. ‘Someone else could steal fish from his pond. But my son went to bathe in the pond. He stole nothing’, he added.
However, before his arrest, Jahirul Islam alleged that the teenager along with two others was stealing fish from his pond. ‘I caught him (the boy) red-handed and punished him for stealing fish from my pond so that he could not dare again to steal anything from anybody in future’, he added.
In a reply, he also claimed that he posted the picture of the teenager on social media to make other pond owners aware so that they could prevent stealing in their ponds.
Charghat Police Station officer-in-charge Jahangir Alam told New Age that the teenager’s father filed a case with his police station at night and that they produced the accused before a court in Rajshshi that sent him to jail on Saturday.
