Leaders and activists of two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League got into a scuffle at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Friday.
BCL activists said that the clash erupted when they were taking preparations to bring out a procession extending a warm welcome to the foreign guests, who are visiting Bangladesh to take part in the golden jubilee celebration programme of the country’s independence.
Witnesses said that members of Dhaka city south branch and Dhaka University branch caught up in a brawl over taking control of a loudspeaker at about 3:00pm.
The DU faction complained that Dhaka city south branch general secretary Jubayer Ahmed started the attack on the followers of DU branch general secretary Saddam Hussain.
Jubayer, however, refused the allegation.
Saddam said that he had requested the central committee leaders to punish the attackers.
BCL central committee president Al Nahean Khan and general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee could not be reached over phone.
