Bangladesh High Commission in Mauritius observed historic March 7 with due solemnity and fervour on Sunday.

To commemorate the day, high commissioner Rezina Ahmed hoisted the national flag and laid a wreath at the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh.

A discussion was held and a supplement was in this connection, said a press release.

Later the messages by the Bangladesh president and prime minister were read out.

Rezina Ahmed also paid tribute to Sheikh Mujib, better known as Bangabandhu, and his family members who were martyred on August 15, 1975.

A video was screened on historic March 7 and a supplement titled ‘The Historic 7 March’ was published in the Sunday Times, a widely circulated English weekly newspaper in Mauritius.

During the programme, Bangladesh expatriates and some Mauritians were present in the programme.

March 7, 2021, is the 50th anniversary of the epoch-making speech delivered by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on March 7, 1971.

The address reduced the governmental authorities in the then East Pakistan to useless showpieces as everything ran according to Mujib’s day-to-day edicts.

This continued until the military junta retaliated with the crackdown and the accompanying brutalities against the unarmed Bengalis on the fateful midnight of March 25, 1971 and the rest is history.

The historic March 7 speech of Mujib has been included in the memory of the World International Register, a list of the world’s important documentary heritage maintained by UNESCO.
