The government on Sunday promoted a total of 337 officials, mostly belonging to the 27th batch of Bangladesh Civil Service, to the rank of deputy secretary.
All the newly promoted officials were made officers on special duty at the public administration ministry as the number of deputy secretaries rose to 1767 after the promotion beyond the sanctioned posts in the administration.
The public administration ministry in this regard issued notifications, which were published in the Bangladesh Gazette, on Sunday.
Of the newly promoted officials, at least 258 were from the BCS administration cadre while the rest from other cadres including agriculture, education, police, information and livestock, according to an official order signed by public administration ministry deputy secretary Mohammad Abdul Latif.
A senior official said that at least 209 officers from the BCS 27th batch got promoted as 235 out of 271 aspirants holding the rank of senior assistant secretaries were eligible for the promotion.
Most of these officials will have to work in their previous positions due to the promotion beyond the approved posts in the organogram, several officials at the public administration ministry observed.
The recruitment process of the BCS 27th batch was completed in 2008, they said, adding that only teachers were recruited through the 26th Special BCS.
In October, 2018, the government promoted 256 senior assistant secretaries, belonging to the 25th BCS batch to the deputy secretary rank, raising the number of deputy secretaries to 1790 that time.
