Several hundred workers of Padma Wears Limited, located at Chattogram EPZ, demonstrated in front of Chattogram Press Club in the city’s Jamalkhan area on Wednesday as the Padma Wear authorities reportedly closed the factory without paying their arrears.
The workers started demonstration at about 12:30pm. Later, they blocked the road and staged a sit-in on the road.
The workers were on the road till 2:00pm causing traffic congestion in the area from Jamalkhan to Cheragi Hills point.
Md Nazrul, a worker of Padm Wears, told New Age that the garment authorities locked the factory on Wednesday morning without serving any notice.
‘The authorities did not pay our arrears and we didn’t find any management official at the factory in the morning,’ he said.
Around 1400 workers went to the factory in the morning and later they came to the Chattogram Press Club, he added.
Mohammad Jashim Uddin, assistant director of Chattogram Industrial Police, who came to Chattogram Press Club, told New Age that they were trying to talk with the management to solve the problem.
Police removed the workers from the road at 2:00pm.
